AI Perks curates and provides access to exclusive discounts, credits, and deals on AI tools, cloud services, and APIs to help startups and developers save money.

What free AI can law students use in 2026?
Law students can use free tiers of Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude, free NotebookLM and Perplexity, and school-provided Westlaw and Lexis. The catalogue adds $240 in Google Gemini credits for students.
That Gemini card shows who qualifies and how to claim. AI Perks tracks more student offers beyond it, and the cards below cover the rest.
Free tiers have caps, and some leave out document upload, the feature that matters most for studying. So the useful question is not "which chatbot is best" but "which tool fits this task, and what will it cost me by exam season."

Which free tool fits each law school task?
Match the tool to the job. Research, outlining, memorizing and checking citations each need something different.
| Task | Free option | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Finding opinions | Google Scholar | Free, no account needed for search, full text of federal and state opinions with citing references |
| Checking a chatbot citation | Google Scholar | Search the case to see whether it is real |
| Case law and citation lookup | CourtListener | Free, from the nonprofit Free Law Project, with millions of opinions and oral argument recordings |
| Working from your own notes | NotebookLM | Free, answers only from documents you upload |
| General questions and drafting practice | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini | Usable free tiers, with caps |
| Quick sourced answers | Perplexity | Free to use at perplexity.ai |
| Flashcards | Anki | Free on desktop and Android, paid on iOS |
Gemini also has paid tiers if you outgrow the free version: AI Plus at $7.99, AI Pro at $19.99 and AI Ultra at $99.99 per month. Meta's Muse Spark is another free option at meta.ai.
For Perplexity, a discounted education plan exists for verified students and educators. The Perplexity card, worth $84, shows who qualifies and how to claim it.
What legal research AI does your school already provide?
Often the strongest tools are already paid for. Westlaw, Lexis and Bloomberg Law are free to you as a student and are the most powerful research tools you will have access to.
Schools differ on the AI layer, so check your library guide. Here is what published school pages describe:
- USD: Westlaw CoCounsel, Deep Research and Litigation Analyzer have been open to law students since Jan. 28, 2026. USD students also gained Protégé General AI in 2026, which lets them draft with general-purpose models inside the secure Lexis+AI environment. Gemini is free to all USD students.
- UC Davis: Students reach Lexis AI tools by logging into Lexis+ and choosing Protégé in the sidebar. An individual midpage.ai subscription costs $10 a month for UC Davis Law students.
- Penn Carey Law: PennChat is free with a PennKey, and Westlaw AI and Lexis+ AI are available under existing subscriptions. Legora is open to 2L, 3L and LLM students. Harvey is open to those students too, but not to 1Ls.
- Sydney Law: All students have been given free educational licences to legal AI tools used in practice.
- Chapman: PantherAI gives students one place to use multiple AI models without separate subscriptions.
Bloomberg Law Answers and AI Assistant cost current Bloomberg Law subscribers nothing extra. Harvey also launched a law school alliance in August 2025 with free platform access for students at participating schools, and Clio offers Vincent at no cost to ABA-accredited law schools.
Your school may not appear on these lists, so ask the library which of these it has.

Does AI training come with law school?
Some schools build it into the curriculum. CSU Law gives every student generative AI training and a skills certificate through AltaClaro. Vanderbilt's AI Law Lab workshops use AltaClaro's DepoSim for simulated depositions and Harvey.ai for drafting, research and analysis.
Open programs exist too. The ASU AI Scholars program is open to law students and connects participants with organizations like OpenAI, AWS, Adobe and Meta.
One program has already closed. WashU's online pre-law AI program ran September 27 to November 1, 2026, and its application deadline was September 10, 2026. Both dates have passed, so look for the next offering rather than planning around that one.
Which catalogue perks are worth claiming?
Beyond school access, the catalogue has student and education cards you can claim directly. Start with $120 in Notion credits for organizing notes and outlines. Each card shows who qualifies and how to claim.
| Company | Free credits | How to get |
|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini (students) | $240 | Get this perk |
| Perplexity (education) | $84 | Get this perk |
| Notion (education) | $120 | Get this perk |
| ElevenLabs (students) | $165 | Get this perk |
| GitHub (students) | Up to $120 | Get this perk |
Total: up to $729 in free credits ($240 + $84 + $120 + $165 + $120 = $729).
The ElevenLabs card, worth $165, and the GitHub card, worth up to $120, are the least obvious for law school. Open them anyway if you want to try voice or coding tools alongside your coursework. How do you set this up, step by step?
Step 1: Get credits via AI Perks. Open getaiperks.com, browse the student and education cards, and start with the $240 Gemini card. Each card opens in place and shows who qualifies and how to claim.
Step 2: Check your school's library guide. Look for Westlaw, Lexis and Bloomberg Law AI features, plus any free access to Harvey, Legora or a campus chatbot. These cost you nothing extra and are the tools you will actually cite from.
Step 3: Add free tools for study tasks. Use NotebookLM for your own outlines and notes. Use Anki for flashcards, and Google Scholar or CourtListener for opinions.
Step 4: Verify every citation. If a chatbot gives you a case, search it in Google Scholar or run it through CourtListener's citation lookup before it goes into anything you submit.
Step 5: Plan for after graduation. School-provided research access changes after graduation, and retail pricing is not student pricing. Decide which tools you will keep before your access ends.

What traps should law students avoid?
Three problems come up again and again.
First, free trials are short. Most commercial study aids give you seven to fourteen days, which is fine for a specific week but not a semester plan. Second, some free plans exclude document upload, so check that before you build a study routine around a tool.
Third, do not assume an AI detector settles anything. Penn Law says an AI detector score cannot serve as proof of academic misconduct. Even so, read your school's AI policy before you use any tool on graded work.

FAQ
What is the best AI for law students?
No single tool wins every task. Use Google Scholar or CourtListener for cases, NotebookLM for your own notes, and your school's Westlaw, Lexis or Bloomberg Law for research. The $240 Gemini card shows who qualifies for student credits.
Is there legal research AI that is free for students?
Yes, often through school. Westlaw, Lexis and Bloomberg Law are free to students, and some schools add AI layers such as Westlaw CoCounsel, Lexis Protégé or Harvey. CourtListener and Google Scholar are free too. Browse more student offers at getaiperks.com.
Are ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini free for law students?
All three have usable free tiers with caps. Gemini also has paid tiers: AI Plus at $7.99, AI Pro at $19.99 and AI Ultra at $99.99 per month. Check the Gemini card for the student credit amount.
Can I trust AI-generated case citations?
Not without checking. Search every citation in Google Scholar, which is free and needs no account for search, or use CourtListener's citation lookup. If the case does not appear in either, treat it as unreliable until you confirm it in Westlaw or Lexis.
What happens to my research access after graduation?
It changes. School-provided access to research platforms ends or changes, and retail pricing is not student pricing. Before you graduate, list the tools you rely on and check the catalogue at getaiperks.com for credits you can still claim.
How much can I claim from the catalogue?
Five student and education cards add up to up to $729: $240 for Gemini, $84 for Perplexity, $120 for Notion, $165 for ElevenLabs and up to $120 for GitHub ($240 + $84 + $120 + $165 + $120 = $729). Open each card to see who qualifies and how to claim.
Ready to claim your credits?
Student cards open in place, show who qualifies and how to claim, and AI Perks tracks more offers than the five listed here.
