Is ChatGPT for Teachers really free?
ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2028 for verified U.S. K-12 educators, and the $240 ChatGPT for Teachers perk card on AI Perks shows who qualifies and how to claim it.
That answers the "is ChatGPT free for teachers" question, with one caveat: free here means a defined period, not forever. OpenAI has said pricing after that is not published, and we cover that below.
The card is where you start. It opens in place, lists the details, and takes you to the trial. AI Perks also tracks more student and educator offers, so you can see what else fits your classroom.

What does ChatGPT for Teachers include?
OpenAI lists unlimited access to its flagship model, file uploads, connectors and apps, voice mode, image generation, data analysis, web search, memory and deep research. At launch the plan highlighted unlimited GPT-5.1 Auto messages alongside search, uploads, connectors and image generation.
It also adds a workspace. Once you are set up, you can use it on your own or invite other teachers and staff in your school or district. A workspace cannot include teachers from other districts.
School and district leaders can claim their domain to bring educators into one workspace. They get role-based access controls and SAML SSO.
OpenAI's own analysis shows what teachers do with it. Educators sent more than 1.9 million time-saving messages, including 900,000 about report cards and progress reports and 800,000 about lesson planning.
How does it compare with ChatGPT Plus and other plans?
OpenAI says regular ChatGPT does not offer what the teacher plan does: a secure workspace for collaborating with colleagues, admin controls, and enhanced data privacy and compliance features. The OpenAI help center compares the teacher plan with a ChatGPT Plus account directly. Here is how the public offers line up on cost:
| Plan | Public cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free consumer ChatGPT | Free | Available to everyone |
| ChatGPT for Teachers | Free through June 2028 | Verified U.S. K-12 educators, workspace and admin controls |
| Student offer for Plus | 4 free monthly billing periods | A separate offer, not the teacher plan |
| ChatGPT Edu | Deployed by universities | Higher-ed counterpart aimed at universities |
If you searched for "chatgpt plus for teachers" or "chatgpt teacher discount", this is the closest public answer. Open the ChatGPT for Teachers card to see the current claim details.

What about privacy and student data?
Schools ask about this first, so here is what OpenAI states publicly. Anything you share in the teacher plan, such as classroom materials or planning work, is not used to train models by default. The Teacher Access Terms go further: OpenAI will not use your content to develop or improve its services.
Security covers multi-factor authentication, SAML SSO and encryption. A 16-state data privacy agreement gives districts a common framework for evaluating the product. Under the Student DPA, Student Data belongs to the School and stays under its control.
There are points to know before you start:
- OpenAI may use automated systems to classify content for safety and quality.
- Access to stored conversations is limited to authorized employees and bound contractors for specific purposes.
- Your school may access, modify or delete your content, and administrators may see classroom content, settings and activity.
- The Teacher Account is separate from your personal account. Personal or commercial projects unrelated to your work are not allowed.
Read the full education terms before you put anything sensitive in.
How long does it stay free, and what comes after?
OpenAI says the plan is free through June 2028. Its public pages are not fully consistent, though:
| Source | Stated end date |
|---|---|
| Teacher plan page and OpenAI announcements | June 2028 |
| Pricing page FAQ | June 2027 |
Treat June 2028 as the headline date and check the card for the latest status. Pricing after the free period is not published. OpenAI says it may introduce or adjust pricing but wants to keep it affordable for educators.
It also promises advance notice of any change, so teachers and schools can decide whether to continue. The terms reserve the right to start charging for services that were previously free. Teacher accounts inactive for over a year without a paid account may be terminated, so log in now and then.
