Which universities have Claude for Education?

Stanford and UChicago give students Claude at no cost. Yale, UMB and UT Dallas sell paid seats, and Columbia lists faculty and staff. If your school is missing, start with the $240 per seat in Claude credits card.

The card shows who qualifies and how to claim. AI Perks tracks more student offers beyond that one, so you can compare before paying for a seat. Campus deals change by semester, which is why the school-by-school list below matters.

What do schools get with Claude for Education?

A school signs an institution-wide agreement, then decides who gets seats, which tier, and who pays. That is why "does my university have Claude" has a different answer at every campus.

Most schools sell two tiers, Standard and Premium. Stanford says Premium is tied to an active SUNet ID with a valid PTA, and that only Premium accounts can use the Fable models. Yale and UMB both describe Premium as roughly five times the Standard consumption.

Stanford also offers Learning Mode, which guides students through reasoning with structured questions instead of handing over direct answers. For a deeper product overview, see Claude for Education 2026: What Campuses and Students Get.

School by school: who gets access and what it costs

Here is what each school publishes. Student access is the column that varies most.

SchoolWho gets accessPublished cost
StanfordAll faculty, students, postdocs and staff from June 30, 2026Standard tier free
UChicagoAll eligible students, after requesting accessNo cost, Chat, Cowork and Code
Penn (Wharton)MBA, MSQF, PhD and undergraduate students, pre-provisionedNot published
YaleFaculty and staff; students only if a school or department sponsors them$20/month Standard, $50/month Premium
UMBFaculty, staff and students who buy a license$200/year Standard, $600/year Premium
UT DallasPhase 1 is faculty and staff only$216/year Standard, $600/year Premium
ColumbiaFaculty and staffNot published
SyracuseStudents, faculty and staff can request Claude Code or CoworkNot published

Some of these numbers need translating. Yale's $20 a month works out to $240 a year per Standard seat ($20 x 12), and its $50 a month is $600 a year for Premium ($50 x 12). UT Dallas's $216 a year is $18 a month ($216 / 12).

How do students get access through their school?

The route depends on the campus. At UChicago, any eligible student can ask for an account, and adoption topped 16,000 users in an October 19, 2026 news item. At Syracuse, students, faculty and staff can request Claude Code or Cowork after watching a training video.

At Wharton, accounts for MBA, MSQF, PhD and undergraduate students are already provisioned. At UMB, you buy a license through the Software Purchasing Form. Yale is stricter: students cannot submit requests directly, and a school or department has to sponsor them for coursework or research.

Some schools skip students entirely for now. UT Dallas says its first licensing phase is limited to faculty and staff, and it points departments to CometAI for student employees who need AI access. Columbia's guidelines describe Claude for Education as available to faculty and staff.

Stanford also runs a separate Standard tier for visiting scholars, affiliates and fellows who do not qualify for the paid Standard tier.

What are the privacy rules on a campus account?

Training on your chats is the first worry, and the schools answer it the same way. UT Dallas says Anthropic will not use inputs or outputs from its accounts to train models. Yale says Anthropic cannot use enterprise users' prompts or outputs for training, unlike non-enterprise accounts. Syracuse and Penn say the same about their workspaces and university data.

The university itself is a separate question. UT Dallas says it can pull data when public safety or litigation requires it, much like Google Drive or Microsoft 365 email. Short of that, it says what you enter is not reviewed.

Columbia says Claude for Education is GDPR-ready and SOC 2 compliant, with a HIPAA agreement expected for Claude.ai. At UChicago, the HIPAA version is a restricted one offering only Claude Chat. Penn adds that confidential university data may only go into approved enterprise tools such as Claude Enterprise, and using it in any other generative AI tool, free or paid, is prohibited.

One more catch: UT Dallas cannot merge a subscription set up outside the university service into the university account. Yale turned off SSO for non-enterprise Claude accounts on yale.edu emails on September 22, though email login still works for them.

FAQ

Does my university have Claude for Education?

Check your IT or AI services page first. Stanford, UT Dallas, Yale, UMB, Columbia, UChicago, Syracuse and Penn all publish one. If yours is silent, browse the student and education cards at getaiperks.com to see which other offers are open to you.

Is Claude for Education free for students?

It depends on the school. Stanford's Standard tier and UChicago's Claude Chat, Cowork and Code cost students nothing. At UMB, students buy a license at $200 a year for Standard. At Yale, a school or department must sponsor a student license. The Claude researcher card lists $240 per seat.

Can my university see my Claude chats?

At UT Dallas, data can be pulled when public safety or litigation requires it. Otherwise, what you type is not reviewed. Anthropic does not train on UT Dallas, Yale, Syracuse or Penn workspace data. Read your own school's policy for the specifics before entering anything sensitive.

What if my school has no Claude deal?

Use individual perks instead. The Google Gemini student card lists $240, and educators can open the Claude teacher card at $200. The full set of student cards is at getaiperks.com, with who qualifies shown on each.

Are the usage limits published?

Anthropic does not publicly disclose usage limits for these licenses. Yale describes a rolling 5-hour window plus a weekly cap that resets at a fixed time for each account. Premium seats at Yale and UMB include roughly five times the Standard usage.

Can I move my personal Claude subscription into a school account?

Not at UT Dallas. A subscription set up outside the university service cannot be folded into the university account. Yale switched off SSO for non-enterprise accounts on yale.edu emails on September 22, though email login still works for those accounts.
