How to Cut Your Cursor AI Bill With Model Credits
Model credits can't pay the Cursor subscription, but they can pay for third-party model usage, which The X Subscription doesn't include. As of October 2026, Claude, GPT and Gemini bill at API list price from prepaid credit from the first request, on Premium and up, with no markup on individual plans.
With your own API key (Cursor Settings > Models), the provider bills you directly, so its credits can cover those requests. Cursor takes keys from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure OpenAI and AWS Bedrock, with limits:
- Premium or higher. Own keys work on Premium ($30 a month), Super and Ultra, and on legacy Pro, Pro+ and Ultra. Free and Plus can't use them.
- Chat models only. Tab always runs on Cursor's models, and own keys don't apply to Auto or Cloud Agents. Select the provider's model explicitly.
- OpenAI is narrower. Keys cover standard, non-reasoning chat models only. OpenAI has announced a proposed shutoff on November 12, 2026 for Cursor-managed OpenAI models, and says your own key will keep working in Cursor's local Chat and Agent.
- Teams pay a token rate. On Teams and Enterprise, every third-party request, own key or Bedrock included, carries the Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens.
