Two things in that table are under-reported.
Anthropic cancelled a price rise nobody wrote about. Claude Sonnet 5 was scheduled to go from $2/$10 to $3/$15 on 1 September 2026. Anthropic's pricing page now states that the increase will not occur, and the $2/$10 rate, originally introductory through 31 August, is the standard price. On a 50M input / 10M output month that cancellation is worth $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, to anyone running Sonnet 5.
Meta's output multiple is the outlier. Every standard OpenAI and Anthropic tier charges 5x to 6.25x more for output than input, the Astra long context band aside. Muse Spark charges 3.4x. If your workload is generation-heavy rather than context-heavy, that ratio matters more than the headline rate. Meta's Contributor tier drops to $0.10/$0.20, with the condition that Meta trains on your prompts and completions. Meta runs no startup credit program for Muse.
Gemini is deliberately absent from that table. We did not verify Google's current rates, and a guessed price is worse than no price.
When GPT-6 Astra Is Worth $50 Per Million Output
Astra is worth the premium when a wrong answer costs more than $60, and it is indefensible when the task is classification, extraction or routing.
Three tests that settle it without benchmarks:
Test 1: what does a retry cost? If a bad output means a human reviews it, your real unit cost is the token bill plus the review. A $0.02 Luna call that needs a five minute human fix is more expensive than a $1.00 Astra call that does not.
Test 2: how long is the output? Astra's input rate is 5x Sonnet 5's, but its output rate is also 5x. On a summarisation job that reads 100k tokens and writes 500, you are mostly paying for input, and the gap narrows in absolute dollars. On an agent that writes code all day, output dominates and the gap widens.
Test 3: can the tier below do it? gpt-5.6-sol at $4/$20 is 0.40x Astra. Claude Opus 5 at $5/$25 is 0.50x and has held that price since 24 July 2026, unchanged from Opus 4.8. Route to the flagship on failure, not by default.

The Long Context Surcharge Above 200,000 Tokens
Past 200,000 tokens of context, Astra input doubles to $20 per million while output rises 50% to $75. The penalty is front-loaded on input, which is the opposite of what most teams budget for.
Crossing the threshold takes a single request from $60 to $95 per million in and million out, a 58% increase. But the two halves move differently: input 2.0x, output 1.5x.
That asymmetry has a direct consequence. Stuffing a 250k-token document into one call is the expensive shape. Chunking it into sub-200k calls keeps the whole job at the $10 input rate. The 200k threshold is a pricing cliff, not a ramp.
OpenAI has not published a context window figure for Astra that we verified, so treat 200k here strictly as the billing boundary, not as the model's ceiling.
