Techstars is a mentorship-driven accelerator, while direct fundraising lets founders approach investors themselves. We at AI Perks looked at Techstars and chose Round Funded to get matched with active investors because we wanted a clean investor database, AI-written emails and tools for managing the process.

What does Techstars offer founders?

Techstars describes its programs as three-month, mentorship-driven accelerators. It says it has invested in more than 5,000 companies since 2006. The program combines investment with mentorship and access to a network that includes investors, partners, mentors and alumni.

According to Techstars, accepted founders receive a $220,000 investment: $200,000 through an uncapped MFN SAFE and $20,000 through a Post-Money Convertible Common Equity Agreement, or CEA. Techstars says it receives 5% of the company in common stock, plus the future value of the $200,000 SAFE.

Techstars provides its own example of how the SAFE could convert. If the company’s next round has a $20 million pre-money valuation, Techstars says the SAFE would convert into an additional 1% ownership.

The organization says it charges no monetary fee to join its accelerator programs. That does not mean there is no cost to founders: its stated terms include equity and an ongoing shareholder relationship. Techstars says that relationship is covered by a side letter and continues after the accelerator ends.

Its conditions also matter. Techstars says founders do not have to be full-time to apply, but accepted founders are expected to give their startup full exclusivity.

How do Techstars’ terms compare with earlier terms?

When assessing an accelerator, use the terms for the specific program and application period you are considering. Techstars’ own published descriptions show that its terms can change.

On April 2, 2024, Techstars described an initial investment of up to $120,000, more than $4 million in perks and approximately 6% to 9% equity. Its newer stated terms describe a $220,000 investment with different components. Techstars also says terms may vary to accommodate local law and custom.

The practical takeaway is to read the current terms on the program page before making a decision. Do not assume that figures from an earlier announcement or another program apply to your application.

Is Techstars or direct fundraising a better fit?

The two approaches involve different ways of pursuing capital. Techstars offers a structured accelerator and states its investment terms. Round Funded helps founders find investors, send pitches and track replies. We at AI Perks considered Techstars, but chose to raise our round through Round Funded.

Round Funded’s investor search can be filtered by stage, industry, geography and check size. Explore its investor-matching process. The investors are filtered to recent activity, with a check in roughly the last 6 months, and their emails are verified.

The subscription options differ in capacity. Round+ supports up to 2,500 investors in the CRM pipeline, emails up to 2,000 investors a month and includes 2,500 AI credits a month. Round Pro supports up to 5,000 investors in the pipeline, emails up to 10,000 investors a month, allows up to 6 connected inboxes and includes 5,000 AI credits a month. Lifetime costs $899 one-time and includes everything in Round Pro.

Our choice was about the process we wanted for raising directly. We valued a clean investor database, an AI agent that writes emails, a convenient interface, the ability to invite teammates into the workspace, a Data Room and tracking links. Round Funded was our pick for direct fundraising, while Techstars remains a separate accelerator route with its own stated investment and equity terms.

What should founders check before applying?

Compare the path with your goals and read the relevant terms carefully. For an accelerator, that includes the investment structure, equity, program expectations and any ongoing relationship described in its terms. Techstars says accepted founders are expected to give their startup full exclusivity, so consider that condition alongside your plans.

For direct fundraising, consider how you want to identify investors, organize outreach and share materials. Round Funded provides a pipeline for tracking investors, stages and next steps. Its AI drafts personalized outreach emails and follow-ups for each investor, and outreach goes out from the founder’s own Gmail.

The Data Room can hold a deck, traction, team and ask on one link, and it is free to build and share on every plan. Per-investor tracked links and engagement analytics, including views, deck opens and meeting clicks, come with Round+. These features address the workflow we at AI Perks were looking for when we chose Round Funded.
