What are free OpenRouter credits and where do they come from?
OpenRouter offers up to $3,000 in inference credits to startups. The larger pool is vendor credit: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Cloud and AWS credits can be spent through OpenRouter with your own keys (BYOK), and the AI Perks catalogue lists the amounts.
There are two separate routes, and they stack. The first is OpenRouter's own credit offer. Its startup page says eligible startups get up to $3,000 in universal inference credits usable across leading frontier and open models. The details of how that works are in the AI Perks catalogue, not here.
The second route is bigger. Most large AI vendors hand out credits of their own, in amounts far above $3,000. If you route those calls through OpenRouter using BYOK, you keep one endpoint and one API shape while the vendor credits pay for the tokens.

How does BYOK let you spend vendor credits through OpenRouter?
With BYOK you add your own provider key to OpenRouter, and the provider bills you for inference directly. Your usage lands on your account with that provider, which is where vendor credits sit. OpenRouter stays the routing layer.
Setup varies by provider, per the BYOK documentation:
- Amazon Bedrock: authenticate with Bedrock API keys or traditional AWS credentials.
- Google Vertex AI: provide a Google Cloud service account key in JSON format.
- Azure: OpenRouter says the simplest route is a Foundry configuration.
One caution. Whether a given credit balance covers BYOK traffic depends on that vendor's own terms, and OpenRouter does not publish that for you. Check the credit details before you build around them.
Control also shifts. With BYOK you control rate limits and costs through your own provider account. With OpenRouter credits, OpenRouter manages your rate limits for each provider.
What does BYOK cost on OpenRouter?
Standard and Business pay-as-you-go plans include $25,000 a month of list-price BYOK inference with no OpenRouter fee. Above that, OpenRouter charges 5% of what the same request would cost at list price, deducted from your OpenRouter credits. Enterprise allowances are custom.
The pricing table puts it as "$25,000 of list price inference / month with no fees, 5% fee after." The allowance is measured by list-price inference cost, not request count, and it depends on your plan.
Here is a worked example using only those numbers:
| Monthly BYOK spend (list price) | Covered by allowance | Above allowance | 5% fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | $10,000 | $0 | $0 |
| $25,000 | $25,000 | $0 | $0 |
| Over $25,000 | $25,000 | Every dollar over | 5% of the excess |
That fee comes out of your OpenRouter credit balance. So you still need some OpenRouter credits to use your own keys beyond the allowance. OpenRouter's own advice is to compare your expected list-price spend with the current allowance before assuming BYOK saves money.

Which credits can you stack on OpenRouter?
The catalogue holds credits from OpenRouter itself and from the vendors whose models you would route through it. The four largest are below.
| Company | Free credits | How to get |
|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter | Up to $3,000 | Get this perk |
| Anthropic (direct) | $20,000 | Get this perk |
| Google Cloud (Vertex AI, Gemini) | $350,000 | Get this perk |
| AWS (Amazon Bedrock) | $300,000 | Get this perk |
Total for these four: up to $673,000 ($3,000 + $20,000 + $350,000 + $300,000 = $673,000).
Those are not the only entries. More catalogue amounts you can point at OpenRouter through BYOK:
| Company | Free credits |
|---|---|
| Claude via partners | Up to $100,000 |
| Azure OpenAI | $150,000 |
| Together AI | Up to $50,000 |
| Cerebras | Up to $22,500 |
| Mistral AI | $10,000 |
| Novita AI | Up to $10,000 |
| OpenAI via partners | $2,500 |
| OpenAI | $1,200 |
Amounts are tracked by the AI Perks team. Program names, eligibility and terms are in the catalogue.
What do OpenRouter credit purchases cost, and when do they expire?
OpenRouter does not mark up inference. Its fee falls on credit purchases: 5.5% on Standard and 8% on Business, never on individual requests. You need a balance even if the free credits do most of the work, so these numbers matter.
| Item | What the terms say |
|---|---|
| Card and other non-crypto payments | 5.5% of the order, minimum fee $0.80 |
| Crypto payments | 5.0% flat, no minimum |
| Purchase size | $5 to $25,000 per transaction |
| Accepted payment (Standard, Business) | Cards, AliPay, USDC crypto |
| Refund window | 24 hours for unused purchased credits |
| Expiry | Unused credits can expire 365 days after purchase |
Because of the $0.80 minimum, small purchases cost proportionally more. Crypto at 5.0% flat with no minimum avoids that, though crypto payments are never refundable.
Refunds are narrow. Only the unused credit amount comes back, platform fees are not refunded, and crypto payments are never refundable. Credits cannot be transferred, including between accounts.
Promo credits follow different rules. They have no cash value, are non-refundable, and the 24-hour refund right does not apply. They expire on the date given when issued, or after 365 days if no date is given.

How do you get OpenRouter credits step by step?
Start with the free credits, then buy only what you need. Here is the order that keeps your cash spend lowest.
- Get credits through AI Perks. Open the AI Perks catalogue, find OpenRouter and the vendors you plan to call, and read the current amounts and terms for each.
- Pick your vendor mix. Match credits to the models you will actually use. Bedrock credits suit Bedrock-hosted models, Vertex credits suit Gemini, and so on.
- Add your provider keys to OpenRouter. Use the BYOK setup for each provider: Bedrock API keys or AWS credentials, a Vertex service account JSON, or an Azure Foundry configuration.
- Buy a small OpenRouter balance. The minimum is $5. A balance covers BYOK fees above the allowance and any fallback traffic.
- Check your fallback setting. By default, if all your keys hit a rate limit or fail, OpenRouter falls back to shared endpoints. Shared capacity spends OpenRouter credits, not your vendor credits.
- Monitor list-price spend against $25,000. Staying under the monthly allowance means no OpenRouter fee on BYOK traffic.
For a deeper look at how gateways handle this, see OpenRouter vs LiteLLM vs Portkey.
Can you test OpenRouter with free models first?
Yes. OpenRouter's models API listed 17 models with a free :free variant on 25 October 2026, plus the Free Models Router (openrouter/free), all callable through the same endpoint and API key you use for everything else. The list included Google Gemma 4 31B, NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Super and Nemotron 3 Ultra, Poolside Laguna and Cohere North Mini Code. It rotates, so see our OpenRouter free models list for the current table.
Free models come with caps:
| Account state | Free-model limits |
|---|---|
| Default | 20 requests per minute, 50 per day |
| Bought at least $10 of credits | 1,000 requests per day |
Failed attempts count toward the daily cap, and a negative balance blocks free models until you add credits. Free endpoints sometimes have smaller context windows than paid ones, so a long-context job that works on paid can truncate on free.
This is a good way to test your integration before any credits are touched. For the full breakdown, read OpenRouter Free Tier 2026: Real Limits, Fusion, and the Stripe Deal.

What mistakes waste free credits on OpenRouter?
Most waste comes from fallback, wrong assumptions about fees, and ignoring expiry. A few checks prevent it.
- Silent fallback. With default settings, a rate-limited key sends traffic to shared endpoints, and that drains OpenRouter credits instead of vendor credits.
- Assuming BYOK is always free. It is free up to the allowance. After that, 5% of list-price cost is deducted from your balance.
- Buying too much at once. Unused purchased credits can expire after 365 days, and the refund window is only 24 hours.
- Paying by crypto and expecting a refund. Crypto payments are never refundable.
- Skipping provider terms. Your vendor credits are governed by the vendor, not by OpenRouter. Read them first.

FAQ
Does OpenRouter give free credits?
OpenRouter offers up to $3,000 in inference credits to eligible startups. Program details are not covered in this article. The AI Perks catalogue tracks that amount next to vendor credits, so you can compare everything in one place.
Can I use Anthropic or OpenAI credits on OpenRouter?
With BYOK you add your own provider key, and the provider bills you for inference directly, so usage draws on your vendor account. Whether a given credit balance covers it depends on that vendor's terms, which OpenRouter does not publish. Check the amounts and details through AI Perks first.
Is BYOK on OpenRouter really free?
Not always. Standard and Business plans include $25,000 a month of list-price BYOK inference with no OpenRouter fee, then 5% above it, deducted from your OpenRouter credits. The allowance is measured by list-price inference cost, not by the number of requests, so a heavy month can cross it.
Do OpenRouter credits expire?
OpenRouter can expire unused purchased credits 365 days after purchase. Promo credits expire on the date given when issued, or after 365 days if no date is given. Credits cannot be transferred between accounts. Vendor credit terms differ, so check the AI Perks catalogue.
Can I test OpenRouter without spending anything?
Yes. OpenRouter listed 17 free :free models on 25 October 2026, plus a free router, on the same endpoint and API key. They are capped at 20 requests a minute and 50 a day. Buying at least $10 of credits raises the daily cap to 1,000 requests.
