AI Perks curates and provides access to exclusive discounts, credits, and deals on AI tools, cloud services, and APIs to help startups and developers save money.

Is there an OpenRouter promo code in 2026?
No. OpenRouter publishes no public promo, coupon or discount code on its official pages, and sites that list one are not official. You can still pay less through top-up choices, an opt-in, BYOK, free models and vendor credits.
OpenRouter's terms say it may provide free promotional credits at its discretion, as part of a promotional program, trial or similar offering. Those Promo Credits have no cash value and are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. That is a very different thing from a code you can type in at checkout.
Two more facts close off the usual shortcuts. OpenRouter says it does not discount inference, and fee discounts exist only on the Enterprise plan. It also does not currently offer volume discounts, though you can email about an exceptional use case.

What does OpenRouter actually charge?
Inference is billed at the provider's list price on every plan, with no markup. OpenRouter's revenue is a platform fee, and it is charged when you buy credits, never on individual requests. The fee is 5.5% on Standard and 8% on Business.
For non-crypto purchases the fee is 5.5% of the order with a minimum of $0.80. Crypto payments are a flat 5.0% with no minimum. Each purchase must be between $5 and $25,000. The table below shows the arithmetic.
| Top-up | Card fee (5.5%, $0.80 minimum) | Crypto fee (5.0%) |
|---|---|---|
| $10 | 5.5% x $10 = $0.55, so the $0.80 minimum applies | 5.0% x $10 = $0.50 |
| $50 | 5.5% x $50 = $2.75 | 5.0% x $50 = $2.50 |
| $500 | 5.5% x $500 = $27.50 | 5.0% x $500 = $25.00 |
The minimum fee bites hardest on small purchases. Whenever 5.5% of the order comes to less than $0.80, you pay the minimum. Prices are exclusive of applicable taxes, so your final bill can be higher than the table.
What are the 5 real ways to pay less on OpenRouter?
There is no single trick. These are five levers that come straight from OpenRouter's own pricing, terms and docs.
1. Make fewer, larger top-ups
Because the fee is charged at purchase, ten $10 top-ups cost 10 x $0.80 = $8.00 in fees on a card. One $100 top-up costs 5.5% x $100 = $5.50. That is a real saving without changing a single request.
Do not overdo it. OpenRouter reserves the right to expire unused credits 365 days after purchase, so only buy what you expect to use within a year. If you pay by crypto, the 5.0% rate has no minimum, which helps on small purchases, but crypto payments are never refundable.
2. Opt in to the data discount
If you let OpenRouter use your prompts and completions to improve the product, you receive a 1% discount on all model usage. It is off by default, and you enable it in your privacy settings.
One percent is small, and it is a privacy trade. If your prompts contain customer data or anything sensitive, skip it. For public or low-risk workloads it is free money.
3. Use BYOK for vendor credits
With BYOK (bring your own key), the provider bills you for inference directly. Standard and Business include $25,000 of list-price BYOK inference per month with no OpenRouter fee. Enterprise allowances are custom.
The allowance is measured by list-price inference cost, not request count. Above it, OpenRouter charges 5% of what the same request would cost at list price, deducted from your credits. This is the lever that connects to free vendor credits, covered in the next section.
4. Use free models and the free router
New users receive a small free allowance to test OpenRouter. Free models are capped at 20 requests per minute and 50 per day, rising to 1,000 per day once your account has bought at least $10 of credits.
The Free Models Router (openrouter/free) automatically selects a free model for your requests. The :free variant is a free version of a model with its own rate limits. Free models are usually not suitable for production use, so treat them as a way to prototype and test.
For paid traffic, the :floor variant sorts providers by price, prioritizing the most cost-effective options. Details are on the OpenRouter pricing page.
5. Check OpenRouter credits for startups
OpenRouter offers eligible startups credits worth up to $3,000. We do not cover who qualifies or how to apply here. The AI Perks catalogue tracks the current amount and the details in one place.

Which free credits beat any coupon?
A 1% discount or a saved $0.80 fee is small next to free credits from the model vendors themselves. The AI Perks catalogue tracks perks from a large number of companies, and several of the largest are model vendors you can reach through OpenRouter with BYOK.
Here is a sample of catalogue amounts relevant to OpenRouter users.
| Company | Free credits | How to get |
|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter | Up to $3,000 | Get this perk |
| Anthropic (direct) | $20,000 | Get this perk |
| Google Cloud (Vertex AI, Gemini) | $350,000 | Get this perk |
| AWS (Amazon Bedrock) | $300,000 | Get this perk |
Total across these four: $3,000 + $20,000 + $350,000 + $300,000 = up to $673,000 in free credits.
The catalogue lists more beyond the table. OpenAI shows $1,200 directly and $2,500 via partners, Mistral AI shows $10,000, and Together AI shows up to $50,000. These are catalogue amounts, not guarantees. Each perk has its own rules, and AI Perks is where the current details live.
For a wider view, see the free AI API credits guide, and for the OpenAI side, OpenAI promotional credit codes. Since the provider bills you directly under BYOK, check each vendor's terms on how its credits apply.
How do you put this together, step by step?
Step 1: Get credits via AI Perks. Browse the catalogue at getaiperks.com, pick the vendors whose models you already use, and see the amounts and details for each perk.
Step 2: Decide your top-up size. If you will also buy OpenRouter credits, make one larger purchase rather than many small ones. Stay within what you can use before the 365-day expiry window.
Step 3: Connect vendor keys through BYOK. Add your own provider key so the provider bills you directly. Keep your monthly list-price usage under $25,000 to avoid the 5% fee above the allowance.
Step 4: Decide on the 1% data discount. Enable it only if your prompts and completions are safe to share. It is off until you turn it on.
Step 5: Prototype on free models. Use openrouter/free or a :free variant for tests. Buying at least $10 of credits lifts the daily cap on free models from 50 to 1,000 requests.

What should you watch before topping up?
Fees and expiry are where cheap plans become expensive. Standard and Business have no minimum spend and no lock-in, so you pay only for what you use, which makes small, careful top-ups easy to test.
- Platform fees are non-refundable. If you request a refund of unused credits, the unused amount goes back to your payment method, but the fees do not.
- Crypto is final. Cryptocurrency payments are never refundable.
- Credits can expire. OpenRouter can expire unused credits 365 days after purchase.
- Promo Credits are restricted. They can only be used on the OpenRouter service and carry no cash value.

FAQ
Is there an official OpenRouter coupon code?
No public coupon or promo code is published on OpenRouter's official pages. OpenRouter may give free promotional credits at its discretion, but those are not codes you can search for. Treat any site listing a code as unofficial, and look at getaiperks.com for credits that are tracked and verified.
Does OpenRouter mark up model prices?
No. Inference is billed at the provider's list price on every plan. OpenRouter's revenue comes from the platform fee charged when you buy credits, 5.5% on Standard and 8% on Business, never on individual requests. OpenRouter does not discount inference either, so list price is the baseline.
Is crypto cheaper than a card on OpenRouter?
Usually, yes. Crypto is a flat 5.0% with no minimum, while cards are 5.5% with a $0.80 minimum. On a $100 top-up that is 5.0% x $100 = $5.00 versus 5.5% x $100 = $5.50. The catch is that crypto payments are never refundable, so only pay that way for credits you will use.
Can free vendor credits be used through OpenRouter?
With BYOK, the provider bills you for inference directly, and Standard and Business include $25,000 of list-price BYOK inference per month with no OpenRouter fee. Check each vendor's terms, then browse amounts for Anthropic, Google Cloud, AWS and more at getaiperks.com.
Are OpenRouter free models good enough for production?
Usually not. OpenRouter's docs say free models are usually not suitable for production use. They are capped at 20 requests per minute and 50 per day, rising to 1,000 per day after you buy at least $10 of credits. Use them for testing, and see the OpenRouter free tier guide.
How much can startups get in OpenRouter credits?
OpenRouter offers eligible startups credits worth up to $3,000. Eligibility rules and application details are not covered in this guide. The AI Perks catalogue at getaiperks.com tracks the amount and the details alongside many other free AI perks from model vendors.
